The Two Frameworks That Took a Global Executive from Stuck to Fast-Track

There’s a moment in every executive’s career when they realize that working harder isn’t the answer.
For Bill—an executive at a global IT company—that moment came during a routine performance review. His numbers were strong. His team was performing. His projects were delivering. And yet, the promotion he’d been eyeing for five years kept slipping further into the distance.
“I’m doing everything right,” he told me during one of our coaching sessions. “So, why am I not moving up?”
It’s a question I’ve heard from countless high-achieving leaders. And the answer is almost never about competence. It’s about strategy.
The Youngest President Who Broke the Record
I once worked with a leader who became the youngest president in his organization’s history. When I studied his trajectory, a pattern emerged that would become the foundation of my coaching practice.
His name appeared everywhere—on almost every significant initiative project, either as the project leader or as a key team member. He didn’t just work hard; he worked visible. He created value, sure.
But more importantly, he made sure the right people saw that value. And in parallel, he built strategic connections with senior leaders—especially the ones who could actually give him the promotions he was aiming for.
Bill could do the same. And so can you.
The V-VIP Fast-Track Promotion Framework
After years of coaching global executives, I developed what I call the V-VIP Framework—a systematic approach that has helped leaders across industries accelerate their career trajectories.
V: Value — Create significant value for your organization on a consistent basis. Not once. Not occasionally. Consistently.
V: Visibility — Showcase that value. Make your contributions visible to the right people, on a consistent basis. Value that no one sees is value that doesn’t count.
I: Initiatives — Create initiative projects that add significant value. Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you. Generate them.
P: Project Leader — Become a project leader—or at minimum, a key team member—of those significant initiative projects. Your name should keep appearing in most, if not all, of the major projects in your organization.
Bill had been strong on the first “V”—he was creating value. But he was invisible. And without visibility, even the best work gets overlooked.
The Sales Boost-Up Dilemma
During one of our sessions, Bill faced a critical decision. A “Sales Boost-Up Initiative” project was launching, and he wasn’t sure whether to join. His background was in operations, not sales or marketing.
“Should I even put my name forward?” he asked.
My answer was immediate: Yes.
You don’t need to be the expert to be a valuable contributor. You need to bring your knowledge, your perspective, and your experience to the table. Every initiative project is an opportunity to expand your visibility and your network.
But Bill also had another project on his radar— a Space Optimization initiative that fell directly under his responsibilities. For this one, I encouraged him to step up as the project leader.
Two projects. Two different roles. One clear strategy: get his name attached to high-impact initiatives.
The CA-BAC Winning Team Framework
But here’s the challenge Bill identified early on: to lead initiative projects and create significant value, he needed a team he could trust. A team that could operate independently, freeing him up to focus on the high-level strategic work that would accelerate his promotion.
So, we built one. Using the CA-BAC Winning Team Framework.
C: Common Goals — Set goals the entire team works toward together.
A: Alignment — Ensure every team member’s thinking and actions align with those goals and the team’s broader objectives.
B: Bond — Build strong, trusting relationships within the team. The kind of bond that makes team members feel like family—safe, supported, and committed to one another.
A: Accountability — Establish both individual accountability (“what I need to do, by when, and how”) and collective accountability (“we succeed or fail together”).
C: Capabilities — Develop each member’s individual capabilities and integrate them into a powerful collective capability. A team that can win as a whole.
From Theory to Action
Bill had already taken some important steps. He’d brought his team together monthly, set up informal meetings, and encouraged them not to wait for his decisions. He’d given them ownership, autonomy, and accountability. And he’d instilled a powerful mindset: “Success goes to my team. Failure comes to me.”
But we needed to systematize it. So, Bill began acting as a team coach—not just a manager giving orders, but a coach guiding his team toward excellence using the CA-BAC framework as his roadmap.
The results? His team became more energetic, more motivated, and more ready for any assignment or project that came their way. He could delegate with confidence, freeing up his time and energy for the high-impact initiatives that would make his promotion inevitable.
Your Turn
Bill’s transformation didn’t happen overnight. But within months, he was leading the Space Optimization initiative, contributing to the Sales Boost-Up project, and building a winning team that could operate without constant supervision.
His name started appearing on more significant projects. His visibility increased. And the conversations with senior leaders began to change—from “good work, Bill” to “what’s next for you?”
Here’s the truth: climbing the corporate ladder isn’t about working harder than everyone else. It’s about working smarter—creating visible value, leading significant initiatives, and building teams that can support your ascent.
That’s what the V-VIP and CA-BAC frameworks are designed to do. And they work, whether you’re a global IT executive like Bill or a leader in any other industry.
The question isn’t whether you’re ready for that next promotion. The question is: are you ready to stop waiting for it and start building toward it?
