The CEO Who Spoke One Language to a Thousand Ears

“When you learn to read people like your favorite book—with curiosity, empathy, and genuine interest—you unlock something powerful. You stop being just a leader with authority and start being a leader with influence.”

CEO Coach and Coach Supervisor

Henry was a regional CEO of a global financial company. He had the title, the corner office, and the authority to make decisions that moved markets.

But he had one problem.

For years, he had been delivering the same message to every audience—the same presentation, the same tone, the same structure. To his team. To global senior leaders. To stakeholders. To decision-makers. One size, he assumed, fit all.

It didn’t.

Henry came to me with a goal that many executives secretly wrestle with but rarely name aloud: “I want to learn how to personalize my communications for specific audiences so they’ll buy into my ideas.”

He was tired of being heard but not understood. He wanted influence, not just compliance.

The Curiosity Cure

Our coaching session began with a simple question: How do you read your target audience?

Henry paused. Like most leaders, he had never thought of it that way.

I shared with him: Read your audience like you’re reading your favorite book.

When you read a book you love, you’re curious. You want to know what happens next. You care about the characters. You notice the small details.

That’s exactly how you should approach your people—with genuine curiosity.

Curiosity is the starting point of all meaningful connection. Without it, you’re just going through the motions. With it, you begin to see people as they truly are, not as you assume them to be.

The EE-FI Leadership Model

Once curiosity is sparked, the real work begins. I introduced Henry to a framework I’ve developed over years of coaching leaders: the EE-FI Leadership Model.

It works like this:

E — Engage. Connect with your target audience frequently and regularly. Don’t wait for problems to surface. Build consistent, meaningful dialogue.

E — Empathize. Understand them deeply. Their expectations. Their motivations. Their pain points. Their fears. See the world through their eyes, not your own.

F — Fulfill. Meet their needs—especially their emotional needs. Every human being has a deep urge to feel important and significant.

I — Influence. When you’ve completed the first three steps, influence comes naturally. You don’t have to force it. You’ve earned it.

Henry’s eyes lit up. “So, influence isn’t something I demand—it’s something I create.”

Exactly.

The Deepest Urge

We dug deeper. I reminded Henry of Dale Carnegie’s timeless principle: The deepest urge in human nature is the desire to be important.

People want to feel valued. Acknowledged. Recognized.

One of the simplest ways to make someone feel important? Give them sincere compliments. Use your observations to notice their good qualities and acknowledge them.

Henry realized something profound that day. He had been so focused on his message that he had forgotten to see his audience. He had been speaking at people instead of speaking with them.

The Shift

By the end of our session, Henry had a clear action plan:

  • Practice the EE-FI Model with his direct reports first.
  • Then, expand to his boss, key stakeholders, and others.
  • Look at people from different perspectives—be more open.
  • Give sincere compliments based on genuine observation.

He left our session feeling what every leader should feel after a breakthrough: complete.

Your Turn

If you’re a leader who speaks one language to a thousand ears, ask yourself: Do I truly know my audience?

Because when you learn to read people like your favorite book—with curiosity, empathy, and genuine interest—you unlock something powerful. You stop being just a leader with authority and start being a leader with influence.

And that’s when your message doesn’t just get heard.

It gets embraced.

Are you ready to become that kind of leader? If you are, then let’s connect!
