A Way to Overcome Your Deepest Fear: Your Thought About It

” You can overcome any fear by reframing your thought about it. “

Not long ago, there was a dedicated professional named Jane. Jane had always been a natural leader, excelling in customer service, problem-solving, and operations. She loved working with people and had a knack for providing solutions to customers. However, there was one thing that always held her back: her deep-seated aversion to finance.

Jane had never been fond of numbers and math since her school days. This dislike for mathematics had grown into a fear of finance, which she had been avoiding for the past four years at the current organization. But now, Jane found herself at a crossroads. She was being considered for a significant position that required a solid understanding of finance. This role would involve reading financial reports and communicating with the CFO using financial jargon.

Jane’s coach, Atip, asked her a simple yet profound question: “What scares you?” Jane admitted her fear of finance and how it stemmed from her dislike of math. Atip helped Jane realize that this fear was the root cause of her hesitation to step up to the new role. Jane acknowledged that she couldn’t avoid finance any longer and needed to face it head-on.

Atip then asked Jane what she was good at. Jane proudly listed her strengths: customer service, problem-solving, operations, people-related work, and sales. She had always enjoyed being a leader and engaging in activities since her student days. Atip encouraged Jane to leverage these strengths while addressing her fear of finance.

Jane also shared her love for private time and her reluctance to travel frequently, which the new role would require. However, she admitted that she also enjoyed traveling, creating a conflict within her.

Through their coaching conversation, Jane gained several key insights:

  1. Her attitude had been an invisible ceiling, preventing her to step up for the past four years. She needed to change her attitude.
  2. She couldn’t avoid finance any longer and had to welcome it with an open mind.
  3. She decided to try learning finance and not aim to become an expert but to understand its foundation.
  4. She recognized herself as a people-leader who loved working with people and customers.

Jane set action steps for herself to overcome her fear:

  1. She would start taking foundational finance courses provided by her company and also learn from her finance peer.
  2. She would keep her mind open and welcome finance into her life.

Jane’s journey to overcome fear was a testament to the power of mindset and attitude. As she embraced her new challenges, she reminded herself of the words of wisdom she and Atip had shared together: “Change our mindset to change ourselves” and “It’s all about our attitude and mindset.”

In the end, Jane’s story was one of growth, courage, and transformation. She learned to face her fear, leverage her strengths, and embrace new opportunities with an open heart and mind.

If you want to overcome your fear just like Jane did, let’s talk. Together, we can explore, discover and overcome your fear so that you’ll become unstoppable in achieving your goals and successes.
