Transform your workplace in 4 clear steps – proven by real results.
“Organizational savvy is the art of navigating change with intention. It’s moving from being a passive participant in an org chart to becoming an active architect of your influence.”

A senior leader I coach—let’s call him Robert—recently came to me before a major organizational shift. His long-time boss had been promoted, and a new, unfamiliar leader was stepping in. Robert’s goal was clear: he wanted to move beyond his day-to-day responsibilities to build sustainable relationships and increase his influence. In short, he wanted to develop what we call, “Organizational Savvy”.
If you’re in a leadership role, you’ve likely faced similar moments of transition—times when the map of power and relationships suddenly changes. The question isn’t just how to adapt, but how to proactively position yourself and your team to thrive.
What is Organizational Savvy?
When I asked Robert what it meant to him, he said:
- Navigating the organization and its people wisely.
- Being an informed stakeholder who understands the undercurrents.
- Recognizing the “power dynamics”—who drives decisions, who holds informal influence, and how things truly get done.
This isn’t about office politics. It’s about “strategic awareness”. It’s the difference between simply doing your job and shaping the environment so your team—and your initiatives—can succeed.
The Framework for Sustainable Influence: VVI+
To help Robert build influence authentically and ethically, we focused on a powerful mental model: VVI+.
- Value: Consistently create and deliver value through your role. This is your foundation.
- Visibility: Ensure your contributions are seen—not just upward, but laterally and downward (360-degree visibility).
- Influence: When you add value and make it visible, influence expands naturally and automatically. People seek out and trust those who deliver results.
- + (Connections): Actively reinforce existing relationships and build new strategic connections. This is the amplifier.
The “+” is critical. In times of change, your network is your navigation system. Robert realized that supporting his new boss wasn’t just about task alignment; it was about rapid relationship-building. He planned to apply the EE-FI Model (a tool focused on the sequence of Engage, Empathize, Fulfill, and Influence) to build trust and understand his new boss’s working style quickly.
Key Insights for Leaders in Transition
- Awareness Before Action. Before charging ahead, pause to map the new landscape. Who are the key players? What are the new priorities? As Robert noted, understanding the “power dynamics” is the first step to engaging with them effectively.
- Influence is a Byproduct of Value and Visibility. You can’t mandate true influence. It’s earned. By coupling the VVI+ and EE-FI models, you systematically build the credibility and relationships that make people want to listen to you.
- Supporting Upward Builds Your Platform. Robert’s approach wasn’t self-serving. He said, “I will support the new boss, make him comfortable… 70-80% of his work will come through me.” By making your new leader successful, you secure a partner who understands and advocates for you and your team’s value.
Your Action Step
Think about your own sphere of influence. Where is the organizational map shifting? Identify one key relationship—perhaps with a new stakeholder, a peer in another department, or a new superior.
Now, apply VVI+: How can you deliver clear Value to them? How can you make that value Visible? What one Connection could you strengthen this week to better understand their goals?
The Bottom Line
Organizational savvy is the art of navigating change with intention. It’s moving from being a passive participant in an org chart to becoming an active architect of your influence. As Robert succinctly put it, the goal is to “Navigate through changes and expand influence.” The path to doing so is through the consistent, authentic practice of adding value, increasing visibility, and nurturing strategic connections.
