Recently, I coached the top executive of an organization. His dilemma was… how to make a sound executive decision on the delayed construction of the new office building.

There were several complicated and challenging issues like… the construction contractor could sue his organization for the damages and loss resulting from the delay based on their claim. My client’s organization could lose the guaranteed deposit (worth multi-million dollars) if he didn’t take any action before the expiration date of the contracted key milestone including other related legal issues as the consequences of this delay.

So, this top executive needed to make his decision on the two main options:

        A) Keep going until reaching the completion of the construction project with the current contractor despite the delay with escalated costs.

       B) Cancel the contract with the current contractor and hire the new contractor to complete this project with possible additional costs. There would be some legal actions and issues related to this decision for certain.

To make the long story short, I’d like to share some key insights from our coaching session as follows:

  1. This executive needs to set up a dedicated project team as soon as possible to handle this project.

  2. He needs to (1) research this construction company in details like their historical background, their work performance in the past up until now like performing a company’s background check. (2) trace back to the former team(s) within his organization, the team who was responsible for this project prior to this executive joining this organization. (This executive just recently joined this organization.) So, he can verify whether the claim of the construction contractor is valid or not (claim: changing of the construction plans too often and too many times causes this project to be delayed).

  3. He needs to find the root cause(s) of the delay or do the fact finding. He’ll set up an investigation board of committee to do the thorough investigation for this project.

  4. He may need to verify the safety of the office building by using the third-party service before continuing with the construction if he decides to go with option A.

  5. He may need to do a decision-tree diagram for a better decision-making.

  6. He needs to engage the board of directors for final decision-making.

At the end of the coaching session, this top executive shared with me that he got a lot more clarity and confidence in moving forward with some action steps than before. Before coaching began, he told me that he got a thought spiral into this dilemma. But after coaching, his thinking got crystal clear like he got an epiphany.

In the following coaching session, he shared with me that he and the board of directors made decision to go with option B after all considerations. He and the board of directors had a clear decision and direction as a result of the clarity this executive got out of our coaching session.

As you can see, not only can coaching give you more clarity, but it also can move mountains for you no matter how complicated or serious your dilemma or issue is. This is the magic and miracle of coaching!

You see, for this top executive, my coaching could help move mountains out of his chest, too! (This is an expression in Thai.)

So, if you’re an executive or a leader of an organization and you need more clarity on your dilemmas, issues or problems and you also want to move mountains, then let’s talk soon! I’m here to move mountains for you!
