Public speaking is both a science and an art. It requires a blend of structured techniques and heartfelt delivery to truly connect with an audience. This article delves into the journey of two leaders striving to become effective public speakers and successfully becoming the two of them. I proudly talk about them because they’re my coaching clients.
The Journey Begins
Meet John and Joe (false names to keep their identities confidential), two organizational leaders with a common goal: to master effective public speaking skills. John, as the public image of an organization, needed to represent it well, communicate effectively in townhall meetings, manage public concerns, and foster better collaboration. Joe, on the other hand, had to present to large groups of agents, making public speaking a crucial skill for his role.
Understanding the Basics
Both John and Joe learned that there are two main types of speeches: prepared and impromptu. Each type requires a clear structure: an introduction or opening to create a strong first impression, a body to excite the audience, and a conclusion or closing to leave a lasting impact. This 3-step structure is essential for both types of speeches.
The Science of Public Speaking
John’s coaching session emphasized the scientific aspects of public speaking. We explored the importance of body language, vocal variety, and the strategic use of pauses. John learned to incorporate facial expressions, eye-contact, hand gestures, and dynamic body movements to enhance his delivery. Vocal variety, including changes in speed, pitch, and stress on key words, was crucial to keep the audience engaged.
The Art of Public Speaking
Joe’s journey focused more on the artistic side of public speaking. He learned to infuse his speeches with genuine feelings and emotions, making his delivery more relatable and inspiring. Storytelling became a powerful tool in his arsenal, allowing him to connect with his audience on a deeper level. Joe particularly loved the 3-step speech structure and the storytelling technique, which helped him create engaging and memorable speeches and presentations.
Practical Techniques and Insights
Both John and Joe discovered the importance of preparation and practices. They were encouraged to write their own scripts, rehearse in front of a mirror, and record their rehearsals to identify areas for improvement. Watching YouTube clips of great speakers provided valuable insights into different styles and techniques.
Visualization techniques were also introduced to help them gain self-confidence before making a speech. By visualizing a successful delivery, they could calm their nerves and focus on their message.
Speech Personalization was also shared with them. They needed to study and learn about their audiences in order to personalize their speeches to match their audiences’ styles, needs and contexts. They needed to read their audiences like they’re reading their favorite books in order to connect with their audiences deeply.
Preparation and Practices
The importance of continuous practice was emphasized. John was empowered with writing and practicing his townhall speeches, while Joe was encouraged to prepare and practice his speeches for upcoming presentations. The key takeaway was clear: practice until the techniques become your second nature.
John’s words of wisdom resonated deeply: “Public speaking needs both Art & Science. Public speaking is about influencing the feelings of your audience.” I shared mine, “You’re a great public speaker when you can inspire your audience to take the action you want.”
Results and Outcomes
The journey of John and Joe highlights the delicate balance between the science and art of public speaking. By combining structured techniques with heartfelt delivery, they transformed into effective leaders who could captivate and inspire their audiences. Their stories serve as a testament to the power of preparation, practice, and the right blend of science and art in public speaking.
John told me that his townhall speech was very well received by his audiences. Some of the feedback he received from the audiences was, “This is one of the best townhall speeches they’ve ever listened to.” While Joe also received very positive outcome and the deep heart-to-heart connections with all the agents after he finished his speech. These resulted from the effectiveness of their public speaking skills.
So, if you need some coaching support about public speaking and how to become more effective public speaker and leader in your own style just like John and Joe, let’s talk soon. Because time and tide wait for no man.
