Sources of Our Suffering: A Deeper Dive
By Atip Muangsuwan
” To overcome suffering, we must find the sources of our suffering. Then, deal with them appropriately with our mindfulness and wisdom. “

CEO Coach and Coach Supervisor
In my previous article, I shared the story of one of my coaching clients who found himself unhappy despite a recent promotion to a higher position and pay grade which had been his dream all along. This client had been struggling with career advancement challenges, which he brought into one of our coaching sessions.
After working together for a short period of time, my coaching could work its magic for him! It helped him achieve the promotion he sought. However, his happiness remained elusive. He felt that the salary increase was relatively small and did not meet his expectations.
Upon reflection, this client identified the root causes of his unhappiness:
- Expectation: He had high expectations for his new salary increase without considering his company’s current situation, market conditions, and the global economy.
- Satisfaction: He had never been satisfied with what he had. He was not an easy-to-please person.
- Thoughts: His negative thoughts were his worst enemy.
Key Insights from His Reflections
- Set Realistic Expectations: By setting realistic expectations, we can find happiness more easily.
- Practice Gratitude: We should be grateful for what we have. To be happy, we should be easy-to-please rather than difficult-to-please.
- Choose Positive Thoughts: We can choose to think happy, positive thoughts. When we think happy thoughts, we feel happy and act happily as a result.
Reflecting on Your Own Sources of Unhappiness
How about you? What are the sources of your unhappiness or suffering? How can you deal with them? Reflecting on these questions can provide valuable insights into your own life and help you find ways to improve your happiness and well-being.
