Why is this important? Because we are social animals. We cannot survive alone. We need other people for us to survive and to thrive. That’s why we need to connect with other people. We need to relate to other people. So, we need to master our relationships with other people, especially if we want to thrive as effective leaders.

To thrive and grow in all areas of our lives, we need to build relationship mastery. Here are a few simple principles to relationship mastery:

  1. Seek to Understand People

You need to seek to understand people whom you want to relate to. The key word is “empathy.” You need to empathize with their thinking, feelings, and actions or behaviors. When you understand people, you’ll be able to deal with them appropriately.

  1. Meet or Exceed People’s Expectations

When you understand people’s expectations and you can meet or even exceed their expectations, you’ll undoubtedly create a good impression with them and they’ll certainly like you.

  1. Accommodate People’s Emotional Needs or Motivations

When you empathize with their emotional needs or motivations and you can accommodate them, you’ll certainly build good relationships with those people. If you can master these three simple approaches, you’ll be on your way to mastering your relationships with people.
