I personally believe that prior to leading people well, we need to lead our “self” well first! If you cannot lead your “self” well, you won’t be able to lead people well.

You’ll need to become an effective “self-leader” prior to becoming an effective “people-leader”. Fundamentally, there are two major kinds of leadership. First, it’s “Self-Leadership”. Second, it’s “People-Leadership”.

To become an effective “self-leader”, you’ll need to master these 7 key areas of life. Below is a “Self-Mastery” framework for your consideration:

Time Mastery

Time is our most valuable resource. Mastering your time involves setting clear goals, prioritizing tasks, and managing your schedule effectively. By doing so, you can maximize productivity and ensure that you are dedicating time to activities that align with your personal and professional goals.

  • Set Clear Goals: Define what you want to achieve in the short, medium, and long term.
  • Prioritize Tasks: Focus on high-impact, high-value activities that bring you closer to your goals.
  • Create a Schedule: Plan your day, week, and month to ensure you are making the most of your time.
  • Avoid Procrastination: Take action on the most important and urgent tasks immediately to maintain momentum.

To achieve Time Mastery at the organizational level, leaders must:

  • Clarify Organizational Priorities: Clearly define the organization’s vision, mission, and values. Ensure that all employees understand these priorities and how their work contributes to them.
  • Streamline Processes: Identify and eliminate inefficiencies in workflows and processes. This can involve adopting new technologies, automating repetitive tasks, and continuously improving operational procedures.
  • Empower Employees: Provide employees with the tools, resources, and autonomy they need to manage their time effectively. Encourage a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Monitor and Adjust: Regularly review and assess how time is being spent across the organization. Make adjustments as needed to ensure alignment with organizational goals.

Physical Health Mastery

Physical health is the foundation of effective leadership and personal well-being. Maintaining good physical health enables you to perform at your best and handle the demands of daily life.

  • Exercise Regularly: Engage in physical activities that you enjoy to stay fit and healthy.
  • Eat a Balanced Diet: Consume nutritious foods that fuel your body and mind.
  • Get Enough Sleep: Ensure you are getting adequate rest to recharge and rejuvenate.
  • Manage Stress: Practice relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation to reduce stress levels.

To achieve Physical Health Mastery at the organizational level, leaders must:

  • Analyze Performance Metrics: Review key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess productivity, efficiency, and overall performance.
  • Evaluate Organizational Structure: Assess whether your current structure supports your goals and operations. Consider making adjustments or restructuring if necessary.
  • Review Processes and Activities: Identify areas where processes can be streamlined and activities can be made more productive.

Emotional and Mental Health Mastery

Emotional and mental well-being is crucial for leaders, CEOs, busy professionals, and basically everyone. Mastering your emotions and mental state allows you to stay focused, make better decisions, and maintain a positive outlook.

  • Develop Emotional Intelligence: Understand and manage your emotions.
  • Seek Support: Reach out to friends, family, or professionals when you need help.
  • Engage in Self-Care: Take time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation.

This involves assessing your organization’s income, expenses, assets, and liabilities. Ideally, you want to ensure that your organization’s income consistently exceeds its expenses over its lifetime.
  • Have Cash Available for Necessary Expenses: As the saying goes, “Cash is king.” Your organization needs to have sufficient cash on hand for necessary expenses. Positive cash flow is crucial for maintaining a healthy organization.
  • Create Multiple Revenue Streams: Multiple revenue streams provide financial security and flexibility. Diversifying your income sources can help mitigate risks and ensure steady cash flow.
  • Maximize Your Earning Potential and Reduce Costs: Maximizing earnings and reducing costs are essential for financial success.

  • Seek Purpose and Meaning: Connect with your inner self and the world around you to find deeper fulfillment.

The Continuous Journey of Self-Mastery

Self-mastery or self-leadership is a continuous journey requiring consistent dedication and practice. There’s no “finish line” for self-mastery or self-leadership. We need to keep improving and developing these 7 key areas of life consistently until the day we die. Because mastery never stops, and mastery never has a “finish line”!

From Self-Mastery to The Greater Good

Once you have achieved self-mastery, the next step is to apply these principles to your organization. By fostering a culture of self-mastery within your organization, you can drive meaningful transformation and contribute to the greater good. Here’s how:
